Murals

Over the years I have created many murals, both for private homes and for businesses. Murals are typically painted with acrylic paint, and sometimes additional plywood is added for 3 dimensional detail. The mural in the Fairport Village Landing, as well as the "Super" mural were done in partnership with friend and fellow artist, Shawn Dunwoody. The owners of the Fairport Village Landing building were battling with teenagers who were kicking in the drywall, so our solution was to attach 1/2” plywood to the wall to create a mural surface that could not be kicked in, as well as inviting kids to join us in doing some of the work. If you invite a community to be a part of a project, they feel invested and included.

Artwork and mural work can do more than beautify a location. They can also create a sense of calm, pride and respect. I suspected that if the owners of the Fairport Village Landing Building took the time and effort to add art, most likely it would be respected and the walls would no longer be viewed as targets for destruction. Since this mural was completed 2007, it has never been written on, punched, kicked, or even scratched. Even more noteworthy is that even the plain walls surrounding the mural have been left almost entirely unscathed.

Murals in the home bring a sense of personality to a room—they are a way of reflecting a person’s specific interests, loves and sense of style. For kids, murals also provide comfort—a safe haven for them to disappear into. When I was a kid, my father painted a mural on one of my bedroom walls, and I was so proud of that mural, and felt so special that I had this unique piece of art on my wall—that NO ONE else had—that I found myself wanting to clean my room more because I felt more respect for my environment and couldn’t wait to show it to my friends.

I was asked to do a mural in the Rosen Pitcher Dental office in Pittsford NY on the landing going up to their second floor. They wanted an outdoorsy theme that was uplifting and non-threatening. The animals I chose to paint were done in a way that showed them outside in their natural environment but looking serene and at home. I chose bright, fun colors to help create an upbeat feel.

In private homes, it’s “anything goes.” I have been hired to paint very specific images from mermaids to animals, to an urban cityscape which reflected the owner’s love for NYC.
